During his military service in 1917, Mies fathered a son out of wedlock. The couple separated in 1918, after having three daughters: Dorothea (1914–2008), an actress and dancer who was known as Georgia, Marianne (1915–2003), and Waltraut (1917–1959), who was a research scholar and curator at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1913, Mies married Adele Auguste (Ada) Bruhn (1885–1951), the daughter of a wealthy industrialist. He began his independent professional career designing upper-class homes. Ludwig Mies renamed himself as part of his transformation from a tradesman's son to an architect working with Berlin's cultural elite, adding "van der" and his mother's maiden name "Rohe" (the word mies means "lousy" in German ) and using the Dutch "van der", because the German form " von" was a nobiliary particle legally restricted to those of genuine aristocratic lineage. Mies served as construction manager of the Embassy of the German Empire in Saint Petersburg under Behrens. He worked alongside Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, who was later also involved in the development of the Bauhaus. He began his architectural career as an apprentice at the studio of Peter Behrens from 1908 to 1912, where he was exposed to the current design theories and to progressive German culture. He worked in his father's stone carving shop and at several local design firms before he moved to Berlin, where he joined the office of interior designer Bruno Paul. He called his buildings "skin and bones" architecture. He strove toward an architecture with a minimal framework of structural order balanced against the implied freedom of unobstructed free-flowing open space. His mature buildings made use of modern materials such as industrial steel and plate glass to define interior spaces. The style he created made a statement with its extreme clarity and simplicity. Mies sought to establish his own particular architectural style that could represent modern times just as Classical and Gothic did for their own eras. He accepted the position to head the architecture school at what is today the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. After Nazism's rise to power, with its strong opposition to modernism (leading to the closing of the Bauhaus itself), Mies emigrated to the United States. Like Odysseus, we stand at the gates of a magical garden where the time of the gods, rather than that of mortals, holds sway. Phaeacia lies near the realm of the gods, and they have allowed some aspects of their world to seep into the garden. It is not just the magnificence of the palace that strikes Odysseus, it is also this disruption of the natural order of time, where past, present, and future - from green grapes to wine - are commingled. In this wondrous garden, Odysseus sees clusters of grapes yet green, other grapes ripening on the vine, some drying in the sun, some being gathered, and others being crushed - all at once. Apples, pears, figs, olives, pomegranates, and grapes grow profusely, giving their bounty throughout the year, regardless of the season. A large orchard with a superabundance of fruits fronts the palace. Directed by Nausicaa, the daughter of the king, he finds his way in the seventh book to her father’s palace, a magnificent structure with gold doors and bronze walls decorated with splendid tiles. In Season 2 of ‘Alex Rider’, Alex is recovering from the experience he had of being at Point Blanc in Season 1 as well as working for the special division of MI6, run by Alan Blunt. I pray that I will get a chance to revisit the ‘Alex Rider’ books, since they are gripping reads. The lead character is just ill conceived – we don’t ever become invested in his conflict with his daughter and, frankly, Cummings overplays the part, going from relatively stable to manic in ten seconds flat and never letting up. The problem lies with a screenplay that attempts to equate Marshall’s downwardly spiraling breakdown with the motivation behind the slayings, one which never connects the dots. Ben Lovett ("The Wind," "I Trapped the Devil") contributes a score that complements the film’s shifting tones. Two additional murders and an attempted third are perfectly staged, the towering wolf shown in just the right amount, enough to suggest the creature’s eerily beautiful menace. Production designer Charlie Textor and all the assorted townspeople flesh it out perfectly. His second film features a seemingly effortless, laugh out loud performance by the late Robert Forster, his last, as Marshall’s dad Sheriff Hadley and boasts an effective production, but Cummings’ psychological character study of ‘the beast within’ in parallel with a serial killing thriller never really meshes.
