![]() ![]() If Playboi Carti had never rocked that piece of Supreme, he perhaps would have never met Ian Connor and if Carti had never met Ian, he probably would have never been introduced to the A$AP Mob. This whole thing would lead to Playboi Carti becoming one of the most significant faces of A$AP Bari’s fashion label Vlone. This was a big turning point for Carti’s career but also for his style… We’ll talk about it in just a bit. Ian also introduced Playboi Carti to the A$AP Mob. Phase 3 (2015-16) –Īfter this point, Ian Connor began sharing Carti’s music and promoting it on social media. Then they started chilling and eventually became buddies. Like most young guys, Carti got into Supreme at that time and he started posting some of his outfits on social media.Īlthough Playboi Carti was still more focused on his music than on dressing but then something just happened and Ian Connor saw a post of Playboi Carti pulling off some rare Supreme clothing and he reached out to praise him for his style.īoth the fashionistas instantly connected over their common interest in streetwear fashion and both being from Atlanta. It was also around this phase when he started leaning into streetwear.Īnd the craziest fact is that it was his interest in streetwear fashion that would change his life forever. It was working for him well… in a recent interview with Kid Cudi, Playboi Carti says that he was elected best dressed in his high school. Nothing too crazy here because it’s not like he’s wearing very designer head-to-toe outfits, but it’s a growth from 2011 to 12. Here, Playboi Carti can be seen rocking a baggy Tommy Hilfiger shirt, skinny denim jeans, and white Nike sneakers. He was starting to take his fashion a bit more seriously in his music video for Pray 4 Me, which came out in 2014. He was very underground, but he started to gain a bit of traction in Atlanta’s hip hop scene. Phase 2 (2013-14) –ĭuring this phase, Playboi Carti’s style didn’t evolve drastically but we can see that he’s starting to think about it a bit more seriously than his previous stage. This stage in Playboi Carti’s style evolution wouldn’t last long… But yes, it was the very first time Playboi Carti began to take his dressing seriously. However, Playboi Carti didn’t take it as far as others, but in many ways during this phase, Playboi Carti was dressed like Tyler, the Creator. They embraced tie-dye, bright hues, snapbacks, and look-at-me graphics. When Odd Future became massive in popularity around 2010-11, it created a trend of youngsters dressing like them. Odd Future was a rap crew featuring Tyler, the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt & Frank Ocean. Well, we can’t criticize him because he was only about 16 years old and this was way before he started earning money.Īlthough, it looks like Odd Future influenced his style. He just needed us to be patient. So, back then, style and fashion weren’t his primary focus and he would mostly just rock graphic t-shirts. Fans hung up on those early leaks might do well to consider them accidental gifts, because when it was time to deliver the album, Carti made sure we got the best of him. There is less “baby voice” here than fans of Die Lit may have wanted, but the rapping (and singing) is some of Carti’s most impassioned and sharpest. ![]() The production-provided by names like Pi’erre Bourne, Art Dealer, F1lthy, Juberlee, Richie Souf, Maaly Raw and Wheezy-is consistently forward-thinking, toeing the line between 808-heavy post-trap rumble and the perpetually weird and increasingly popular avant-pop sound known as PC Music. And so goes the story of the project: Whole Lotta Red is likely pretty close to what fans were expecting, but better. ![]() Of the project’s 24 songs, Cudi is one of three featured guests, appearing alongside likewise stylistic innovators Kanye West and Future. That song does not appear on Whole Lotta Red, but Kid Cudi himself does, on “M3tamorphosis”. One the internet took to calling “Kid Cudi” had a unique sort of staying power. In the two years following the August 2018 announcement of Playboi Carti’s Whole Lotta Red, you could have gauged any given Carti fan’s investment in the project by which song leak they claimed to have liked the most.
